Another Contemporary Sculpture History Of China

Journal of <Sculpture> issued in China is one of the two sculptures professional journals in the world(<SCULPTURE> issued in America and <Sculpture> issued in China). Since January 1995 to January 2015, <Sculpture> marches pace of the times, adapts to the development of society, and fairly and fully exposes the unprecedented expansion in the concept and form of internal and foreign sculpture in the recent 20 years. <Sculpture> has witnessed the development of contemporary sculpture. In this paper, in order to open a unique window to pry contemporary sculpture, to discern cultural problems and academic connotation which Chinese contemporary sculpture faces in the recent 20 years, to induce people to think another narrative mode of sculpture history, and to fully appreciate the unique style of contemporary sculpture, journal of <Sculpture> was taken as the investigated object.In this paper, after seven modes of contemporary sculpture, including general mode, uniform mode, collective mode, individual mode, biological mode, cultural mode and philosophical mode, were systematically classified, the unilateralism of former sculpture history writing was realized deeply. Thus, in order to establish another writing manner of contemporary sculpture, seeking to unify diverse presentation and “two-track” analysis, combining scatter investigation with comprehensive discussion, breaking narrative mode of original sculpture history entirely will be beneficial to improve the history narrative of sculpture and expand the theory space of sculpture.The thesis consists of five parts. Firstly, taking idiographic sculpture, figurative sculpture and abstract sculpture as investigated object, the creation condition of Chinese contemporary sculpture was discussed. Then, changing traditional ideas of sculpture history which took sculpture as outline, an overview on sculpture history of the past 20 years was summarized spectacularly. The overview included “pre-text” and “pre-process” of sculpture(sculpture process aesthetics), “potential theory” and “line will” of Chinese ancient sculpture(national traditional sculpture new theory), “supper elephant speaking” and “process meaning”(abstract sculpture theory), and “anti-urban” urban sculpture(city public art theory). All of above clear out new thinking of the study of Chinese contemporary sculpture history. When sculpture industry was investigated, to highlight the current vitality of Chinese sculpture industry, two key events of rating international sculpture festival and “Top 20 Chinese sculpture enterprise” were enclosed. Like the sculpture industry, innovation of Chinese sculpture education was dynamic. For 20 years, Chinese sculpture education mode was no longer limited in “French mode” and “Soviet mode”, and it gradually became diversely, and then gradually formed a unique Chinese sculpture education system. Outstanding sculpture exhibition of college graduate and construction of academy of fine arts teaching system could be described as the highlight of the past 20 years’ Chinese sculpture education. Finally, from the “going out”---visit of Chinese sculptor delegation, and “bring in”---referrals of famous foreign sculptor, an interactive communication of internal and foreign sculpture was exposed.From the perspective of social and cultural significance, art history is not single and flat. Anyone has different views and interpretations about history, and these views and interpretations rich history itself, that George Kubler’s “linked solutions”. They can learn from each other and supplement each other, so that reconstruct the past history, and form an open and face-to-future history speech. Effects and constraints on development of sculpture are also very complicated. Therefore, an open sculpture history should be a variety of methods and theories co-existed and have interactively meaning history. Based on this understanding, in this paper, <Sculpture> was taken as investigated object, new mode of Chinese contemporary sculpture history was explored, and an open, multivariate another Chinese contemporary sculpture history was formed.
