As an important part of Hunan folk arts and crafts, Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts was in all aspects of people’s lives and closely combined with Hunan traditional folk custom, and also it has been placed with people’s wishes for a better life and for happiness. The existing Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts mainly contains three categories, namely, blue calico printing and dyeing, bandhnu, batik. As the craft’s living culture carrier, the inheritors of Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts, plays a crucial role in Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts’ protection, inheritance and development.From the perspective of the inheritors’ oral history of Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts, exemplified with inheritors case studies, supplemented by literature research, field survey, market survey, classification analysis, comprehensive analysis and other methods, this paper tries to summarize the geographic characteristics, cultural features, technical characteristics, heritage and innovative measures of Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts, to sort out a comprehensive analysis of the skill classification, geographical distribution, pattern characteristics, folk custom applications, tools, raw materials, application process, the inheritance vein and other information features. Also, this paper focuses on the current situation of Hunan traditional printing and dyeing crafts’ inheritors, and tries to help them express their individual value at the same time, to refine the living features in this crafts, thus, provoking the thoughts of its inheritance, protection and development and exploring a new ways for its inheritance, protection and research.
