Film during the period of Republic of China is the beginning stage in Chinese film cause. As China’s movie started, movie posters which are called the name card of film had caught people’s attention interests with its unique charm of visual art, and became the important medium to make early movie in public. This article’s subject are movie posters during the period of Republic of China (1911-1949) and tries to analyze the development of movie posters during this time and does research of its content form and characteristics. From the content of the poster, it tries to excavate the art and communicate value, deeply analyze the development and change of movie industry, social culture and modern advertisement, and affirm the historical and culture value of early movie posters. Through the research of relevant documents and the origin and background of movie posters, it summarized the development routs, layout design and color change in the early times. This article considers that the development of movie industry business advertisement, the photography and print have promoted the flourishing of movie posters. Secondly, through the internal research of movie posters, it summarizes the special art of value and effective of advertisements and the communication value during the Republic of China, and consider that the movie posters not only promoted the social status of female star, but also gave birth to the early advertising endorsers. Finally, this paper tries to analyze the film industry, the progress of modern history, the development of social cultural and the modern advertising development from the movie posters. This can affirm the important value of movie posters which during the period of the Republic of China. Early Chinese film poster, is a product of Chinese and western cultural exchange and collision, it learned from western movies artistic achievement at the same time. It also influenced by the traditional culture of the early Chinese. From the posters, they reflected the national characteristics obviously. From the horizontal perspective in the same historical period, the regional differences, cultural differences, social environment and so on all can influence the development of Chinese movie posters. From the longitudinal perspective, the development of Chinese movie posters, it can be influenced by the film industry, modern commercial and the modern art. This article summarizes the development of movie posters’ history during the period of Republic of China, and explores the value of it, and affirms its significance by collected, sorted and analyzed the early posters.
