A Study On Shapiro’s Cognitive Thought

In recent years, embodied cognition is a hotspot in the field of cognitive philosophy. Shapiro puts forward the concept of standard cognition, whether the important divergence in interpreting the relationship between standard cognition and embodied cognition is a kind of competitive relationship, or complementary relationship, or cross relation under certain conditions. On the basic of carding the developmental process of standard cognition and embodied cognition, Shapiro discusses the theoretical and methodological problems of standard cognition and embodied cognition across the empirical analyzing the fields of psychology, neuroscience and the artificial intelligence.This thesis divides three parts to discuss Shapiro’s cognitive thought. The first part is the sources of Shapiro’s cognition thought. His cognitive thoughts come from standard cognition and embodied cognition. The core of standard cognition is computational representation. The centre of embodied cognition means that the body plays a key role in cognitive process. The cognition can not be separated form the body, while the cognition formed through the interaction with the brain, the body and the environment.The second part is the constructing dimensionalities of Shapiro’s cognitive thought. He puts forward three kinds of cognition that are conceptualization, replacement and constitution. Shapiro discusses the challenges from the concept of embodied, research methods of cognition and the constituent theory of cognition faced by standard cognition and embodied cognition. Shapiro interprets the theoretical and methodological of standard cognition and embodied cognition across the empirical analyzing the fields of psychology, neuroscience and the artificial intelligence. Embodied cognition can not replace standard cognition entirely. However, at present embodied cognition has an important influence on the study of cognitive philosophy.The third part analyses the significances of Shapiro’s cognitive thought. Shapiro reconstructs the concept of embodied and integrates the representation and dynamical system theory of cognitive method and improves the constituent theory of cognition. Therefore, the studying on Shapiro’s cognition thought not only has an important theoretical significance, at the same time, it also has a certain methodological significance.
