Isis was originally an Egyptian goddess, and later the cult of Isis spread to other places near Egypt. In the Empire Era the cult of Isis had been disseminated all over the whole Mediterranean world. At this time, the cult of Isis could be considered as a world-religion. In terms of the religion type, this cult differed from the traditional Greek-Roman religion:it was one of the so-called mystery religions. With its influence increasing, the Goddess had been gaining a higher status, and sometimes she was treated as the One Goddess. In the cult’s spreading, Isis was often identified with other goddesses. Some of Isis’attributes were strenghtened, but at the same time others were weakened or transformed. Among these attributes, the salvation was a typical one. On the one hand, the primitive Isis was endowed with the element of Salvation, but it was covered with the function of the royal descent. On the other hand, Isis’salvation developed rapidly and became one of the most important functions, which could be seen distinctly in the Golden Ass. The reinforcement of the salvation in the Isis cult should be indebted to the Hellenistic Movement. Consequently, it prompted the cult’s spreading in the Greaco-Roman world and endowed the goddess the more universality.
