Culture is the core of a nation. In modern society, culture plays an even more important role in enhancing national cohesion, boosting cultural consumption, invigorating the development of relevant industries, coordinating the relationship between human and nature, as well as promoting the harmonious development of society. Thanks to the diversification of geographical environment, local cultures with different characteristics flourish in China. However, with the acceleration of economic globalization and integration, the environment in which the local culture develops is changing dramatically, which poses great threatens to the survival and uniqueness of local cultures. In order to protect the integrity and authenticity of local culture, the establishment of Eco-cultural preservation area is formally put forward in<The national 11th five-year plan period cultural development plan outline>. The essence of Eco-cultural preservation area is to protect not only the physical culture, but also the intangible cultural as well as the environment in which the culture forms and develops.Under this background, this paper takes the Ba culture as the research object, and defines the boundary and range of the Ba eco-cultural preservation area by building the evaluation index system and referring to the eco-cultural relation forces as well. Besides, the key contents of protection are illustrated. What’s more, this paper offers advices on the management and operation of the Ba eco-cultural preservation area.By studying comparatively, several important conclusions are drawn from this paper.Firstly, the buildup of Ba eco-culture preservation area is an effective way to protect the integrity of Ba culture.Ba culture has unique characteristics due to the special environment in which it forms. The eco-cultural preservation area emphases the protection of not only the tangible and intangible culture, but also the environment in which the culture forms, which benefits the integrity of Ba culture.Secondly, with the application of the index system for the evaluation of which area can be included in the Ba eco-cultural preservation area, Chongqing municipality, Yichang city and Bazhong city get the highest scores, while Shiyan city and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture get the lowest scores. To abide by the principle of eco-cultural preservation area, which is to protect both the culture and the environment in which the culture forms, this paper proposes the index system for the evaluation of which area can be included in the Ba eco-cultural preservation area with 15 elements. According to the evaluation, Chongqing municipality, Yichang city and Bazhong city get the highest scores; Guangyuan city, Bazhong city, Dazhou city, Nanchong city, Guangan city, Enshi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Hanzhong city and Ankang city get the relatively high scores; however, Shiyan city and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture get the lowest scores.Thirdly, Nanchong city and Guangan city have the strongest eco-cultural relation forces with Chongqing municipality, while Shiyan city and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture don’t have close eco-cultural relations with other relevant cities. With the application of the gravity model, the eco-cultural relation forces among the relevant cities are calculated. According to the results, Nanchong city and Guangan city have the strongest eco-cultural relation forces with Chongqing municipality, while Shiyan city and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture don’t have close eco-cultural relations with other relevant cities.Fourthly, the Ba eco-cultural preservation area includes the Chongqing municipality, Guangyuan city, Bazhong city, Dazhou city, Nanchong city, Guangan city, Yichang city, Enshi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Hanzhong city and Ankang city.Measuring and analyzing the evaluation index as well as the eco-cultural relation forces of the 12 relevant cities, two cities that do not have strong relations with the other cities and get the lowest scores in the evaluation are ruled out from the Ba eco-culture preservation area, namely the Shiyan city and the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture. As a result, the Ba eco-cultural preservation area includes the Chongqing municipality, Guangyuan city, Bazhong city, Dazhou city, Nanchong city, Guangan city, Yichang city, Enshi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Hanzhong city and Ankang city.Fifthly, Chongqing municipality, Yichang city and Bazhong city that get the highest evaluation scores are chosen as pilots, and three sub regions are divided surrounding the three cities.According to the evaluation scores, Chongqing municipality, Yichang city and Bazhong city are chosen as pilots as they get the highest scores based on the evaluation index system. Then, based on the eco-cultural relation forces between other cities and the three pilots, three sub regions are divided. The one taking Chongqing municipality as the core includes Guangan city, Dazhou city and Nanchong city. The one taking Yichang city as the core includes Enshi Tujia and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture. The one taking Bazhong city as the core includes Guangyuan city, Hanzhong city and Ankang city. This paper builds up the Ba eco-culture evaluation index system with the application of analytic hierarchy process. In addition, this paper proposes that, the eco-culture evaluation as well as eco-cultural relation forces combined can be applied as the effective references for the defining of the range of the eco-culture preservation area.
