| When Southeast university was prepared to be built in 1920, under the chancellor Guobingwen’s elaboration, Southeast university was able to become the most famous institution of higher education along with Beijing university in a short period of time. The predecessor of Southeast university, namely Nanjing Higher Normal period, formed the style of study of honest and realistic,while relatively conservative on cultural position, under the influence of Chancellor Liruiqing, Jiangqian and Liuyizhen et al. When Southeast university began to extend and widely collect talents in the early 1920s, the arrival of Wu Mi and Mei Guangdi contributed to the formation of the school of Xueheng, as a cultural group, they were antagonistic to Beijing’s new culture. The thriving of Southeast university brought prosperity of academic thoughts, Liuyizhen and others took this opportunity, and entered into the center of China’s academic stage, and played an important part then.This article mainly studies the activities of Liuyizhen between 1921 and 1925. Except introduction and conclusion, the body part is divided into four chapters. The introduction part, makes an illustration about the origin and significance of choosing the topic, reviews the main achivements on the study of Liuyizhen in recent 30years and the remaining space to explore, and it also introduces the use of historical data and academic innovations in the writing process.Considering of the lack of an overall biographical research on Liuyizhen currently, the first chapter uses the relevant historical materials to have a relative detailed introduction about his lifetime.The second chapter first discusses the rise of Southeast university, and the formation of university spirit. The extension of Southeast university provided a stage for the emergence of the school of Xueheng. Just in that moment, Mei Guangdi, Wu Mi, Hu Xian Su and Liuyizhen created the magazine ’Xueheng’ based on their mutual cultural position, which started arguments with new culture school towards the attitude to Chinese and western cultures. The passage then argues the important role Liuyizhen played in the starting maintaining process of the magazine, demonstrating the point of view that Liu’s second place in the school of Xueheng, only after Wu Mi. The article then specially analyzes Liuyizhen’s cultural view, after the analysis of two aspects, namely the background of the arguments of both sides and Liu’s cultural view, I finally came to the conclusion that Liuyizhen is not a cultural conservative. He is not against of new culture, he thinks if the new culture apts to China, he would like to see the spreading of it, what he opposes is the style of study in the new culture movement that put excessive vilification towards tradition, he argues that "while absorbing western culture, we shouldn’t forget our own nation’s standpoint’. Therefore, it’s more appropriate to define Liuyizhen as a cultural rationalist.The third chapter is the relationship between Liuyizhen and journal of historical and geographical society. This chapter first introduces the general situation of it’s publication, then it states Liuyizhen’s status and influence in the school of thought of history and geography-Liu is the spiritual tutor of that school of thought. He not only directed students to have systematic research on historical geography, facing the trend of’suspecting the ancient’ of Gu Jiegang and Hu Shi from Beijing University, he and his student Liu Shanli wrote articles to critise the style of study of blind ’suspecting the ancient’ in the academic community, out of a scholar’s integrity. But Liuyizhen’s’belief in ancient’ is not just to praise Chinese culture while to critise the western culture, his intension is only the extreme ’suspecting the ancient’ trend, his purpose is to let the academic circle to treat traditional culture calmly and willingly.Chapter four explores Liuyizhen’s position in the process of replacing chancellor in the Southeast university. First,this chapter teased the process of the replacement of chancellor in Southeast university. Second according to memories of the relevant parties and reports about the accident from newspapers, I analyze the causes of the accident, and come to the conclusion that the manipulation of the National Party under the proposition of ’party education’ is the main reason, while the complex internal personnel relationship is just the powderhose. The reason why Liuyizhen surprisingly became one of the main characters who were against of Guo Bingwen, it’s not for personal fame and wealth, nor to coincide with the National Party, but purely out of a scholar’s conscience, he was not willing to see the university involved in politics, advocating that the university’s internal affairs should be decided in a democratic manner, his original intention was to make greater development of southeast university, but ultimately made himself become the victim of the National Party’s ’party education’.The conclusion part of this article summarized and ascended the content, it serves as the link between the activities for Liuyizhen between 1921 and 1925.The formation of Liuyizhen’s cultural view’thrive the quintessence, melt new knowledge’is closely linked with the tradition education he received and with his growing environment. At the same time, this period was the most brilliant academic experience in his life, also influenced his entire academic career. After leaving Southeast university, Liuyizhen served as the director of the library studying Chinese culture in Jiangsu province for more than a decade, in order to save the Chinese ancient books, he collected rare and value books with the help of all parties he could. After the outbreak of Anti-Japanese War, he was always on the go in order to divert commanding books, sparing no effort to the new generation of the Chinese culture.Through Liuyizhen’s activities in this period, what we’ve seen is a historic scholar who tried his utmost to thrive traditional Chinese culture, a moderate rectifier to cultural revolution radicals. Compared with the new culture school, Liuyizhen is a culture rationalist. This is what this article finally to want to present. |
