| The active part is known to all played by modern scholars, especially of whom Hu Shi was representative, in the modernization of Chinese historiography. But there was nevertheless a variety of dispute about NHNS (Nan king Higher Normal School, later called Southeast University) scholars whom Liu Yi-zheng represented. For quite long they were even thought of as the inheritors of feudal historians, or at least they couldn't be classified into modern history. For instance, Modern History Ninety Years by Xu Guan-san refused to refer to Liu Yi-zheng, Qian Mu and others, simply because they were thought to belong more to traditional historians, which had nothing to do with Modern Historiography under the influence of western culture. This determination's making was more partly because previous historians considered excessively single the access to the modernization of historiography, and inside them only the concept of modernization or westernization was indistinctly haunting, which obviously is not comprehensive in today's historians' minds. No doubt quite a part of Chinese modern historiography originated from western modern historiography, but from the results of historical development, it should be undoubtedly looked upon as the crystallization of the combination of western and our native historiography. Over the process of combination some scholars advocated to absolutely deny traditional culture and hopedto accomplish the modernization of Chinese culture including Chinese historiography through transplanting western culture immediately. This theory as well as its practice, however, is no wonder a failure. The import of western historiography and its influence were best concerned about scholars who researched into the history of Chinese modern and contemporary historiography, and who investigated the modernization process of Chinese historiography. On the contrary less attention was paid to how to explore valuable resources from traditional historiography and facilitate its modernization. It is simply because they behaved more like the latter that this thesis has selected NHNS Historical and Geographical School as its study object, in the hope of getting a complete knowledge of the modernization process of Chinese historiography through the research into their historical activities. The thesis consists of the introduction, the conclusion and the text of four chapters. The introduction mainly expounds the current situation of this monograph, and the author's train of thought and problems to solve.Chapter I, From Historical and Geographical Institute to Historical and Geographical School, exhaustively explores the activities of Historical and Geographical Research Institute as well as the formation of Historical and Geographical School based on these activities. It expounds the connection between Historical and Geographical School and theXueheng School, analyzing in study concept and direction the similarities and differences compared with Scientific Positivist School, of which Hu Shi and Fu Si-nian were representative, and the confrontation in thinking focus and substance of the so-called North School and South School, in order to protrude the overall scholarly characteristics of NHNS Historical and Geographical School.Chapter II, On the Scholarly Concept and Method of Historical and Geographical School, researches into their fundamental cognition of this piece of humanities, namely, historiography, and into their historical philosophical concept, their fundamental scholarly thought and study style.Chapter III, On Historical and Geographical School and the Construction of Modern Historiography, specially researches into the theory about the construction of modern historiography and its concrete practice both in the system of historical theory, history teaching, professional scholarly periodical, professional institute and in the construction of it operating environment.Chapter IV, On the Achievements of Historical and Geographical School, states the chief achievements of Historical and Geographical School in two aspects:... |
