Bird and flower paintings in China were germinated in the ancient rock paintings and generated from the original pottery and Han Dynasty stone. Through the development in the Tang and Song dynasties, it has become one of the three subjects (landscape painting and portraits). In the history of paintings, it occupies an important place. The painting styles were gradually classified into the performance style and freehand brushwork style. The beauty of freehand bird and flower paintings, different from landscape paintings, has its own unique requirements which the size is true as the original. While the landscape must be small, figures vary. Owning literary accomplishment and aesthetics, artists have to accomplish their composition and creation according to the different requirements and unique regularity no matter what kind of artistic work. Bird and flower paintings has enriched the form of traditional Chinese paintings in the long-term practice, playing an important role for Chinese paintings standing in the world. Bird and flower paintings are completed using the unique feelings. So it has been popular, enduring and become an important part of splendid traditional Chinese culture. Like landscape paintings, bird and flower paintings stress the mood and fun. The drawing point is Chinese painting’s "vivid Qiyun" and they follow the law of its own development and change continuously. "Qi" and "Yun" inevitably become the soul and the strength of character of bird and flower paintings.This paper focuses on "Qi" and "Yun" of bird and flower paintings. By understanding the development of freehand bird and flower paintings, and interpreting "Qi" and "Yun" of bird and flower paintings, we appreciated Chen Chun, Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi’s "Qi" and "Yun" in their works, and then put them into practice. This paper was accomplished in the premise of learning the forerunners’skills and analyzing "Qi" and "Yun".It was also generated by the thought of positive effect of the graduation work, containing the topic selection, the theme, composition, pens, ink, colors and "Qi" and "Yun". A further theoretical discussion is expected on the perspective of "Qi" and "Yun" of bird and flower paintings.
