The Application Of Rewriting In Literary Translation

Translation is not just a matter of exchanges between two language symbol systems, and it is also subject to ideology. The constraint results from different culture conflict and collision. As a result, translation is virtually a matter of exchanges between two cultures. In the case of any disorder of cultural exchanges in the process of translation, the tool of "rewriting" is often used to meet the needs of the readers of the target text.Lefevere considers translation is to rewrite the original text. All translation works reflect a certain ideology...That is to say, language is under the manipulation of ideology, which is embodied not only in the action of rewriting the original text, but in the whole process of publishing a book, which includes:choosing a book, checking its content, finding translators and publishing it. And particularly, he points out that a translator translates more than the literal meaning of the original text, but, the most important, the ideology taken on by the words. In a word, translation is "rewriting" under the manipulation of ideology.The thesis first introduces Lefevere’s rewriting theory and then describes the application of "rewriting" in the translation of the book entitled The Secret of the Old Clock written by American author Carolyn Keene. This thesis consists of four parts:the first chapter introduces the writing background and the content of the novel; the second describes the procedure how this translation practice is finished; the third uses cases and examples to explain the application of the rewriting theory in the practice work of translation, and the several means of "rewriting" used in the translation are further detailed as modification, supplementation, deletion and explanation; the last states the significance of translation practice and experience to the future work of a qualified translator.
