Rewriting Studies On Cultural Elements In Howard Goldblatt’s C-E Translation Of Feng Ru Fei Tun From The Perspective Of Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory

André Lefevere, the representative of cultural manipulation school, put forward the rewriting theory for the first time. Lefevere introduced the concept “rewriting” in his book named as Translation, Rewriting and Manipulation of Literary Fame and put the proposition that “translation is rewriting”. He thought that translation is not just a switch in the language level, but a rewriting in the cultural level that translator does to the original. Generally, rewriting refers to some behaviors of in-process and adjustment to the original such as deletion, supplement, rewriting, edition, and criticism and so on so that it can serve for a certain society and it highlights these three constraints such as the ideology, poetics and patronage. The rewriting theory gets rid of the shackles of text. Such kind of open research changes the focus of translation theory to the macroscopic factors influencing the literary system, and it can provide a new perspective for the translation studies.Language is closely related to culture. The language is a carrier of the culture and it is restricted by the culture. Language reflects people?s cultural cognition and has the function of conveying culture. Therefore, if the translator does not deal with the cultural translation, it will be the obstacle for the cross-cultural communication. Thus, in the process of translating the connotative meaning of words, we must take the readers into consideration. Only in this way, can the translation can reach its relevant effect so that it can play the role of cross-cultural communication. The biggest difficulty of translation is not the language itself, but the cultural deposits that language carries. No matter what translation strategies we adopt, we should take the cultural characteristics as well as the readability of translation into consideration. Nida divides cultural elements into five categories:(1) ecological culture;(2) social culture;(3) material culture;(4) religious culture;(5) linguistic culture.Since the most of researches for the English translation version of Big Breasts & Wide Hips are focused on the translation and life experiences of Goldblatt as a translator. However, few people study his translation concepts and practices in detail, so this thesis is based on the Lefevere?s rewriting theory and takes Goldblatt?s version as its study object as well as uses Nida?s classification of cultural elements as a standard to analyze the rewriting of cultural elements in Goldblatt?s translation by comparing the original with the translation version. The thesis mainly puts forward following two research questions: ⑴ Why does the translator choose Mo Yan?s FengRu FeiTun as his source text under the influence of three constraints of Lefevere?s rewriting theory? ⑵ How does the translator rewrite the cultural elements in his translation from the perspective of the rewriting theory?At first, the author analyzes how the translator is influenced by the three constrains in the course of translation from the perspective of Lefevere?s rewriting theory. And then the author takes some examples casually from both the original and the translation and reaches following results through the comparison and analysis between the two versions:(1) The reasons why Goldblatt chooses Mo Yan?s FengRu FeiTun for his source text are the influences of his ideology, mainstream poetics and the publishing;(2) In the process of translation, Goldblatt rewrite the Chinese cultural elements a lot through different translation methods. The thesis combines the theory with a typical case study to help clarify the influences of rewriting theory to the course of translation. Meanwhile, such research provides a powerful reference for the translation of Chinese Contemporary literature.
