This report is based on the practice of translating excerpts from the book Fashion,Costume, and Culture:Clothing, Headwear, Body Decorations, and Footwear through the Ages — Volume 3. This book mainly talks about the evolutionary process and culture of European costume from the Renaissance to the Modern Era. The translation is done by a team of three students, and each student is responsible for her own part and the translation report.According to the translation assignment, I am responsible for the part about the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, in these two parts, the author first introduces the economic, political and cultural development in different centuries, and then talks about the whole trends of European costume in the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century. At last, the author describes in detail the costume and fashion of European countries from clothing, headwear, body decorations and footwear. The development of costume will be influenced by the previous costume in the history. And as we have seen, most of today’s clothing styles are just a reform from other ages. Many popular retro elements and retro styles all have something similar to the European costume and fashion in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. What’s more, western countries always lead the world’s garment trend and fashion, so it is important for us to know the history of western costume culture. I hope that this translation can provide some materials to scholars to do research in this field. This report consists of four parts: task description, process description, case study and conclusion. The report is intended to demonstrate how skopos theory is applied to guide this translation practice.
