A Report On The Translation Of "China And Christianity : The Missionary Movement And The Growth Of Chinese Antiforeignism"(Excerpts)

Since 19 th century, Christianity had met with twists and turns during its missionary movement in China. It had gone through a longtime history when Chinese culture and Christianity contacted, communicated, collided and intermingled. Paul A.Cohen, Professor of History Emeritus at Wellesley College, wrote the book "China and Christianity: the Missionary Movement and the Growth of Chinese Antiforeignism " which mainly introduces the anti-Christianity tradition in Chinese thought and the anti-Christianity tradition in action of the 1860 s.The translation of the book is of great importance for Chinese readers to know about the long and tortuous missionary history and the development of Chinese exclusion. Meantime, it may provide experience and ideas for the texts of its own kind.This report, for one thing, mainly discusses some problems with the Skopos theory that the writer has encountered when translating part of Chapter one, by means of corresponding analysis of the writer’s translation and the source text; for another, it tries the most to reveal the historical truth to readers of Chinese missionary movement and the growth of anti-foreignism.The report consists of four major parts: the task description, process description,case analysis and conclusion. In the case analysis, the theoretical foundation is a basic interpretation of Skopos theory. Based on Skopos theory, the translation strategies and principles are discussed and illustrated, including Wade-Giles romanization, additions or deletions of the source text, parenthesis, approaches to the translation of long and complicated sentences, as well as notes in the translation. Through this project, the translator hopes that the report and the translation rules and skills induced can worth reference for translation with the same category, namely cross-culture translation.
