With the development of multiculture in the world, Communication between western and eastern culture becomes faster and faster, therefore, many countries like Australia also open a trip of cultural exchange. Nicholas Jones is a celebrated Australian writer, and his works, characterized by his unique writing style, center around the common theme of the construction of the image of China in western culture.Therefore, this thesis mainly intends to indicate the features and values of the image of China under the conlicts between Chinese culture and Western culture, by analyzing the image of China in Jones’ novels and reflecting how to promote cultural conversation equally. This thesis consists of five parts:The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the author Nicholas Jones and his works, followed by a literary review both at home and abroad, and an explanation of imagologie, the arguments and significance of this research in the thesis.The second chapter focuses on two theoretical terms, that is, the definition of“exotic image” and “the image of China”, which uses to interpret how the image of China show in Jones’ works.The third chapter mainly discusses the construction of the image of China in Jones’ novels by the comparison of different Chinese characters in similar novels.Further, this interpretation mainly emphasizes on both “Chinese artificial scenery” and“Chinese characters”.The fourth chapter presents how the image of China in Jones’ novels comes into being, national psychology and the writer’s cultural identity and further probes into cultural barriers owing to different values and national psychology in Sino Australian literature exchange. Thus, this chapter will tempt to seek for the way to solve this issue.The last chapter is the conclusion. It serves to summarize the main points in this thesis. By summarizing the above three main parts, this part aims to point out that it is essential to remove the inherent imagination in order to promote equal conversation.
