Kobo Abe is a distinctive writer in the Japanese modern literature. The special childhood experience made his early works filled with Chinese characteristics. Destructive and subversive of the war made him struggled with personal, collective and national identity dilemmas. Kobo Abe’s post-war novels have always been concerned about identity issues. However, Chinese scholars rarely discuss the identity issues in Kobo Abe’s post-war novels.Based on the identity issues in Kobo Abe’s post-war novels, with the method of textual analysis, this thesis analyzes the confusions and struggles of characters in the collective, national identity confirmation. At the same time, combined with the background of the war and the social, historical status in Japan, this thesis also explores the deep spiritual metaphor of identity writing behind the text in Abe’s post-war novels. Then with a comparative research perspective and the background of the postwar literature, the writer of this thesis compares Kobo Abe with other Japanese writers, highlights the heterogeneity of identity writing in Kobo Abe’s post-war novels. Finally, on the basis of the text analysis, combined with Kobo Abe’s life and thoughts, this thesis also deeply explores his life basis of identity writing and ideological roots.
