The Aesthetic Effect Of Simile In Turgenev’s Home Of The Gentry

Simile, a significant phenomenon, has been widely used in both Chinese and Russian literature. Compared with intensive and careful study in Chinese, the research of metaphor in Russian remains rare, because most Russian rhetoricians only give a concise introduction of metaphor in metaphorical works, but without a thorough and detailed elaboration on a specific novel.Turgenev has a profound effect on Russia, Europe and even the world. He is the most sensitive and responsible writer in Russian literature. His perceptive sense of art, impressive depiction of mind, smooth and precise language are models of writers from all over the world to follow. Therefore, to enhance our understanding of rhetoric in Russian, improve writing ability and enrich manner of oral expression, it is of great importance to analyze and investigate Turgenev’s language skill. Even though there are abundant research on Turgenev’s work, most of them are about the character, aesthetics and art, seldom on the rhetorical figure.As the second longest novel, Home of the Gentry is appraised as the perfect and best constructed novel by Pisarev. Besides, it is claimed to be the most successful work by Turgenev himself.This paper analyze Home of the Gentry from the perspective of metaphor and statistic classification of connective, vehicle and tenor. Home of the Gentry includes 129 sentences with simile. This paper choose 75 sentences for further elaboration and illustrate the traits and rules of these metaphorical sentences. At the end of the paper, metaphor’s effect on environmental depiction is analyzed, as well as on the aesthetic characterization of Liza, Lavretsky, Varvara, Panshin and Lemm.
