The United States is a multiracial immigration country, in which immigration plays an important role in the development of American society. The author selected the newly published book Migrants and Race in the US in 2013 written by Philip Kretsedemas, an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Boston as the translation project. The Chinese version of the book is nonexistent. Therefore, the translation of the book can provide a good source for comprehending American current situation and culture correspondingly. This report is composed of a translation practice and a report, which can be considered as the combination of theory and practice. The translation report consists of the analysis of the original text, case studies and conclusion of the practice. From the points of words and sentences, the translation project is the analysis and conclusion of the first two chapters of the book based on the brief introduction of translation practice and background information with Newmark’s text type, translation shift and other theories as guidance. On the grounds of the analysis and summary of the Chinese translation of the text, the author found that social science texts have relatively small number of difficult and new words, yet covers largely long and difficult sentences with strict logic. From the point of words, when there exists something in common between the original language and the target language, the use of four-character structure is adopted. Moreover, in view of the habits of the target language and the purpose of readers’ acceptance, the means of amplification is often used. In terms of difficult sentences, the author mainly analyzes and makes adjustment from the whole context by using appropriate skills such as amplification, segmentation, preposition,post-position and other strategies to obtain a relatively smooth Chinese version.
