A Probe Into The Translation Strategies On Subtitle Translation In Chinese Historical Teleplays From The Perspective Of Dynamic Equivalence Theory

The author firstly translates the subtitle of the first three episodes of Da Qin Di Guo(The Qin Empire) under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s dynamic equivalence theory. Based on the features of subtitle translation and historical teleplays, the author makes an analysis of the translation from the linguistic level, cultural level and aesthetic level to explore the translation strategies of subtitle translation. This report consists of four parts: introduction, process description, theoretical basis, case analysis and conclusion. The first chapter is subdivided into three parts: background introduction, text introduction and textual characteristics. In this chapter, the author introduces the source text including the historical background and the characteristics of the source text. The second chapter is process description. The author gives a specific introduction to the translation company’s requirements and the translation process including the pre-translation work and translation schedule. The third chapter is compromised of three parts: previous study on subtitle translation, dynamic equivalence theory and case analysis. It explores the translation strategies of subtitle translation by the case study of The Qin Empire from the linguistic level, cultural level and aesthetic level. Altogether the author explores the translation strategies of subtitle translation from varied dimensions in order to evoke the same feeling of the foreign viewers. Translation strategies such as amplification, omission, literal translation, free translation, division, adaption between affirmation and negation are adopted flexibly in the translation. The last chapter is the conclusion which gives a summary of the experience of this translation. The author also highlights the role subtitle translation plays in cultural communication and emphasizes that dynamic equivalence can be used to guide subtitle translation. In the meantime, the author also identifies the flaws in the translation, which shall be subjects for my further study.
