A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Chapter Four Of The River Of Big Torrents

This thesis is a report on the translation of the fourth chapter of The River of Big Torrents. If we take a look at the global literary world of stories regarding War of Resistance Against Japan(1937-1945), we could find a considerable amount of resources ranging from reports of media, memoirs of retired sold iers and officials. However, C hapter Four of The River of Big Torrents is quite different in that it is written in a teenager’s perspective and records what happened around the author and her family in the big context of warring time. The plain and straightforward memoir makes it hard to translate it into as natural for English readers as for native C hinese recipie nts. The employment of Functional Equivalence Theory helps to reach the effect of equivalence by abandoning the pursuit of excessive demand on word-to-word equivalence. Besides, the translation of this book into English offers the Western world a new perspective when it comes to the memory of the Second World War and C hinese arduous fight against Japanese invasion.This report consists of four chapters. The background and significance of translating the book is represented in C hapter O ne. C hapter Two lays emphasis on N ida A. Eugene’s Functional Equivalence Theory, which forms the framework for translating the book. C hapter Three focuses on difficulties the translator encounters during the translation process. The last but not the least, Chapter Four reviews the whole translation process, and discusses problems to be solved. Translation theory derives from practice and in turn guides practice; meanwhile, practice then enriches translation theory. For translators, challenges and opportunities coexist in the translating process. To be qualified, a translator has to be equipped with the capability of combing theory and practice, making best use of every opportunity, applying theory into practice.
