Chinese traditional music improvisation teaching is of great practical and historical significance, which aims to preserve the traditional music culture, cultivate creative thinking among teenagers and hopefully develop a unique way of music education with Chinese characteristics. After over two years’actual practice of the experimental teaching, the primary and secondary schools in Zhengdong New District of Zhengzhou, Henan, the experiment base, have made both achievements and mistakes. The paper makes a field investigation of the experimental teaching there, not only analyzing its classroom teaching, participant teachers and students, and experiment results, but also concluding in an objective and rational way its strengthen and weakness. Moreover, as one of the participant teachers, the author underwent the actual process of experimental teaching, and experienced all the ups and downs personally. The value and the significance of the research is highlighted by this personal experience which covers everything from learning the theories and skills concerning music creation and complication, selecting teaching materials, preparing for classes, delivering classes, reflecting on teaching, collecting and analyzing music works, evaluating teaching effect, to putting forward suggestions for improvements.The paper mainly concerns itself with the experimental teaching in Zhengdong New District in terms of its classroom teaching, professional growth of teachers and students, experiment results, experiment effect, the merits and demerits of the experiment, and the corresponding solutions. An empirical approach is adopted in this paper, as is demonstrated by the use of experiments, classroom observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The paper first gives an overall picture of the experiment base, namely, Zhengdong New District of Zhengzhou, Henan, by introducing the selection of participant teachers and schools, the training of teachers, and selection of teaching materials. It then reveals in a systematically way the development path of the experimental teaching from the following five aspects, namely, classroom observation, demonstration and analysis of teaching achievements, professional development of teachers, professional growth of students, and experimental teaching in the eyes of the participants. It finally summarizes the strength and weakness of the experiment, reflects on its problems, and comes up with some suggestions in the hope that the paper can provide some theoretical and practical evidence for future research and practice in this field.
