The knife processing is a carving skill that maximizes the explosion of materialcharacteristics through arranging the carving knives. It normally leads to the simplicity andintensity of the carving products. As one of the most significant features and the most directlyvisual languages in black and white wood carving technique, it typically represents theideological content and artistry of the carving artist. The basic development of the knivesprocessing is the restructuring of the objects based on the artist’s observation and it is clearlyshown that the evolving cycle of knife technique is actually a symbol of wisdom, concern andefforts during the creating procedure and even their thoughts on life and dedication of arts.The knife processing in black and white woodcarving was changed from a copy of artists’carving skills into the art language owning independent value of beauty in a long time. Andduring this changing, the knife processing itself also developed as the purpose shifting. For acarving artist, the knife skills are the most important media to convey his or her opinion andemotion to the audience. Therefore, the study of that could provide insightful ideas on theartistry and aesthetics of each product.Representing the symbolic charm of black and white woodcarving, the content of theknife processing is not only a representation on objects but also a disclosure on the aestheticsand emotion. It is true that the knife technique is matching the artist personality and the spiritmotivation when producing the products. Content of knife processing could be either anexclusive art model belonging to the age of the products, or a tool of artist whichcommunication with audience emotionally. What is included in this paper is actually myanalysis on the linking between knife processing, era of the products and the character of theartist. It will definitely forge my understanding on the knife skills thus benefits me on knifetechnique selection. I believe it is a practice on black and white woodcarving, and also alearning procedure on knife skills...
