| Mr. Huang Zhusan is one of the pioneer researchers andfounders in the field of Chinese Drama heritage. His research coverswidely drama text, drama heritage, ritual drama etc., and presentsplentiful research contributions to us. In particular, reflecting uponsome difficult issues in Chinese drama history, he pointed out quitea few original ideas. He respects the realities, innovates the ways ofresearch, and at the same time holds on to the emerging direction ofdrama research. Via a lot of field observation, he tries to solveproblems using evidential material and documentary records, andfurther on, forms a unique view on the history of drama. This viewhas brought about wide and deep influence on the area of dramaresearch and attracted the attention of scholars home and abroad.His view of drama goes with time, makes continuous breakthroughs,and has so far formed an established system.This paper makes a systematic inquiry into Mr. Huang Zhusan’sviews of drama. It starts with the present status of Mr. Huang’sresearch, combs through three stages of his research--hisinvestigation into drama text, his exploration into drama heritage, and his expansion onto ritual drama. His views on the drama historyinclude:1mutability of drama resources and variety ofperformance;2synchrony of performance in the rural and urbanareas;3“Fan†drama presentations;4forwarding and consolidationof the view-“beifang younuoâ€. His research thereby shows updistinctive features such as original, realistic, and comprehensive.Mr. Huang based his views of drama history upon solid research ondrama heritage, realistic and rigorous attitude, and kicks off a newand fresh perspective for research on Chinese drama history, makesitself an example and direction for forthcoming research.
