Tan Chuduan (1123-1185), the second disciples of WangChongyang, served as the third generation master of QuanzhenTaoism in old age, and has an important position in the history ofQuanzhen Taoism. Meanwhile, as one of the important scholars ofTaoist literature in Jin Dynasty, he takes the role of a connecting linkin the development of Taoism literature from oral to literal. This thesistakes Tan Chuduan and his work Shui Yun Colection as the mainresearch objects to carry on the comprehensive elaboration in theaspects of Tan Chuduan’s life, work content, thought characteristicsand Taoist image etc.Quanzhen religion is an important school of Taoism in Jin Dynasty.Quanzhen Taoism literature is also an important part of the literaturein Jin Dynasty. Tan Chuduan joined the Quanzhen in middle age, thenfollowed Wang Chongyang to travel in Luochuan and had a deepunderstanding of Quanzhen thought. In the process of cultivation, TanChuduan created more than200works of Taoism literature, whichwere named as Shui Yun Collection. After suffering many times of lost and republication, this collection was included into Taoist and wasspread until now. In the basic content of precticing and preaching, hiswork can be divided into preaching morality, conversation advice andattunement Hindus three categories according to different functionsof the work, embodying the unique function of Taoist literary creation.Quanzhen thought takes "syncretism of the three religions"as thebasic point of view, takes magic air making Nei Dan as the core ofpractice. It will ultimately achieve the purpose of quietism and realizethe prime state through removing the secular lust and experiencingPenance two methods. Much description on Quanzhen thought existsin Tan Chuduan’s work. This thought appears especially obvious in hiscreation of literary image, such as “Dragon and Tiger” in animal,“Lotus”in plants,“Yanxia”in landcape,“Penglai”in place,“Cha baby”interm class, which are all tipical Taoist image. Only by combining themeaning of traditional literati creation with the meaning of religion,and by interpreting the inherent meaning of image, can people havebetter understanding of Tan Chuduan’s literary creation.Besides, Tan’s work has elegant customs, integration of richlanguage forms and innovation of names of the tunes and tune rhyme.His work is added some elegant ethereal on the base of WangChongyang, Ma Yu’s colloquial form, then provides experience for theliteral transformation of Qiu Chuji and broaden the road of development of Quanzhen Taoism literature.The literary tendency oncontent and form of Tan Chuduan’s work has great influence on thedevelopment of Quanzhen literature, and establishes his importantposition in Quanzhen literati.
