The basis of this project involves two Chinese tutorials. A Grammar of theChinese Language, and Dialogues and Detached Sentences in the Chinese Language,both by Robert Morrison, the missionary from Great Britain in19thcentury. Both theadvantage and disadvantage of contents, principal of arrangement, and the philosophyof teaching are analyzed to extend the research range for Chinese teaching to secondpractical way in the meanwhile.This article includes four chapters.Chapter one introduces the meaning, research situation and research plan of thisarticle, and the reasons for picking up these two books as studying cases.The meaningof this article is to introduce and research the reason and value of the tutorials byMorrison. The research situation designs to address the achievements anddisadvantage of these two tutorials for the goal of research. The plan involves thetarget and method respectively, which includes the expected results and the specificmethods used in this study. Meanwhile, through the analysis of the historical status oftwo tutorials and their inheritance, the necessity and value of this researc h will beshown.Chapter Two, as the main part, analyzes the style of A Grammar of the ChineseLanguage systematically. Based in content of tutorial, vocal, text, grammar areexplained. In Chinese Spelling, syllables, tone and writing are introduced.WhileGrammar includes the Eight Category of Word, namely nouns, adjectives,pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjection.Based with theclassification by Morrison, the common rules and features of classifying arediscussed.Dialect describes the differences between dialects and Mandarin,and thefeatures of Cantonese. In Rhythm, The Book of Odes and Hymns, Five Character Poem and Seven Character Poemare related. There are paragraph to summarizecontents (arrangement, selection of language)in order to show the pros and cons. Thissection attempts to do the perspective and detailed research to A Grammar of theChinese Language.Chapter Three is also the main part. Firstly, Dialogues and Detached Sentencesin the Chinese Languageis introduced in a detailed way.The main part of the book,from topic selection, origin of resources, setting of conversation characters, togrammar notes are explained. Secondly, famous aphorism, common sense aboutweight and measuring are mentioned briefly.The advantage and disadvantage aboutarrangement and topic resources, and this tutorial are evaluated after every part.Chapter Four discusses the value of Chinese tutorials by Morrison. Theconclusion of the concept of making these tutorials is identified and analyzed toachieve a successful way for compiling Chinese tutorials and teaching Chinese tosecond language speakers. The goal of this project is to evaluate the tutorial made byMorrison for future research.In conclusion, this project attempts to explore the concept of Morrison’s tutorials,and evaluate them on the basis of A Grammar of the Chinese Language and Dialoguesand Detached Sentences in the Chinese Language.
