Emerson’s thoughts and Confucianism seem to be the products of different cultures indifferent historical periods. Indeed they are intrinsically interwoven with great proximity. Thereare many similarities between Emerson’s Transcendentalism and Confucianism. This thesisaims to explore the influence of Confucianism on the ideas of Emerson with a focus on theirproximity.Specifically, the proximity between Emerson’s Transcendentalism and Confucianismfinds it major expressions in such fundamental philosophical issues as God, man, and nature.Therefore the thesis focuses on the aspects of oversoul, human nature, self-cultivation, nature,and the Golden Mean, where the influence of Confucianism on Emerson are well illustrated.The thesis believes that Confucianism plays a decisive role in Emerson’s Transcendentalistideas. Only in the light of Confucianism can the essence of Emerson’s thoughts and theconnotation of his works be fully and accurately revealed.Although Transcendentalism lasts a little bit more than a decade in the United States, itinfluence on American society and culture can still be felt today. The comparative study ofTranscendentalism and Confucianism may lead to a better understanding of their historical roleand social significance in different cultural contexts.
