As new year paintings are a kind of painting in the national fine arts exhibitions of the new China, their development shows the change of mainstream ideology of the new China’s fine arts. From the perspective of the fine arts history, this thesis integrates the multi-subject achievements and methods of the comprehensive art history, folk art study, art, etc. and discusses the creation concepts, themes, as well as styles and language through choosing the new year paintings in all previous national fine arts exhibitions of the new China as the object of the study. The research purpose is not only to summarize the development of the new year paintings in the national fine arts exhibitions, but also to enrich and improve the fine arts history of the new China from the perspective of the folk art to provide a reference for the related researches.The horizontal comparison research and analysis are conducted in the same period of different historical divisions of the national fine arts exhibitions. The thesis includes four aspects. Firstly, sort out and summarize the national fine arts exhibitions and their backgrounds. Secondly, summarize the themes of the new year paintings in the national fine arts exhibitions. Thirdly, discuss the styles and language of the new year paintings in the national fine arts exhibitions. Fourthly, summarize the creation concepts of the new year paintings in the national fine arts exhibitions, and finally, entirely summarize and analyze the new year paintings in the national fine arts exhibitions to deeply discuss the value and significance of the existence of new year paintings on the basis of the above three aspects. The research results show that new year paintings are a form of folk arts, and their creation concepts, contents, along with styles and language are on the premise of the national spirit from the perspective of the involvement in the national comprehensive fine arts exhibitions, and their creations present different faces in different historical periods to produce various developing forms. The thesis sorts out and demonstrates the problem of how to transform the traditional new year paintings into modern ones with the mainstream morphological characteristics of the fine arts under the guidance of the creation concept of national fine arts exhibitions.
