The Contrastive Study On Discourse Markers Between ’(?)’ (in Korean) And ’不是’ (in Chinese)

Discourse markers is an important part of oral communication, the correct, proper use of discourse markers can improve the efficiency of oral communication. As we all know in natural conversation speaker or listener expresses their ideas without any prior preparation. The conversation develops according to the actual conversational environment. So the conversation may be unnatural than expected or listener may can’t understand what the speaker said. Therefore in order to maintain natural conversation speaker often use discourse markers in actual conversation. Through the use of discourse markers, listener can understand the communicative purposes of speaker and avoid misunderstanding. Therefore the discourse markers play an important role in actual communication.But people always think that discourse markers are verbiage sentence and the use of discourse markers means they can’t speak fluently. Because of the lack of understanding about discourse markers, there are rare deep studies on discourse markers. Therefore, this research is focusing on "(?)" and "不是" which signifies the cognitive difference between speaker and hearer. By contrast study and statistics, this study explore the similarities and differences between "(?)" and "不是" on the discourse functions in oral communication.With the statistics about "(?)" and "不是" appear in the beginning and middle of turn we found that both of "(?)" and "不是"occur in the beginning of turn more than the in the middle of turn. Therefore in this paper we use the drama related with hot issues of Korea and China as a corpus to analyze the discourse function of "(?)" and "不是" which appears in the beginning and middle of turn. And we also made a statistics of the frequency of each function and the following sentence. Firstly, we studied the discourse function of "(?)" and "不是" when it appears in the beginning of turn. We found that both of them have the negative function, and it also used as the expression like surprise, dissatisfaction and turn openning function But when "(?)"appears in the beginning of turn it also have thinking time earning, explanation function. But we "不是" occurs in the beginning of the turn it doesn’t have these functions. However when "不是" occurs in the beginning of turn it have, expressed speechless, confirm function, turn opening by ourselves. But when "(?)"occurs in beginning of the turn it doesn’t have such functions.This research finds the frequency of occurrence about the function of "(?) " used in the starting of turn is appeared in following order of negative function, absurd expression, surprised expression, turn opening function. But frequency of the functions of "不是" used in the starting of the turn is appeared in the following order of negative function, unsatisfied expression, absurd expression, surprised expression, forcible turn opening, recommend turn opening Because the frequency of occurrence of negative function of "(?)" and "不是" is high so we can say that it is the main key function of "(?)" and "不是" when it comes in the starting of turn. This paper also reveals the fact about the statistics of corpus. Function of "(?) " and "不是" is same when it comes in the starting of the turn but there is a difference between the following clause of "(?)" and "不是". For example "(?)" and "不是" both are used similarly for surprised expression when it comes in the front of turn but the following clause of "(?)" is based on interrogative sentence or assertive sentence and the following clause of "不是" is based on rhetorical question.This study also analyze the communicative function, frequency of occurrence and the characteristics of following clause of "(?) " and "不是" appears in the middle of turn. When "(?)" and "不是" appears in the middle of turn then it express as self correction, enlightenment and incomprehensive behavior. But"不是" have switching attitude function when it used in the middle of turn but "(?)" doesn’t have such function. The frequency of occurrence of functions of "(?)" in the middle of turn appeared in the following order of expressing self correction, enlightenment, incomprehensive behavior of speaker. But the frequency of occurrence of functions of "(?)" in the middle of turn appeared in the following order of expressing enlightenment, self correction, incomprehensive behavior of speaker, switching attitude. Therefore the main principle function of "(?)" is self correction but the main function of "不是" is enlightenment when they come in the middle of turn.This study specified the functions of "(?)" and "不是" as a discourse marker by analyzing corpus and statistics. This statistical research also describes the frequency of occurrence of each function and the parts of following clause. It also summarize the functions of "(?)" and "不是" as a discourse markers, frequency of occurrence and the similarity and difference between the different parts of following clauses. Hence it is significant in terms of education and research about discourse markers.
