A Study Of The Vocabulary Of The Wangtai Dialect In Nanping,Fuijian

Wangtai Town is located in Yanping District, Nanping City, Fujian Province. The Wangtai dialect is classified as belonging to the Min dialect. Although there has been much valuable research on the Min dialect, few scholars have focused on the Wangtai dialect. Because the Wangtai geographic area lies within the Northern Min geographic area, scholars have tacitly acceptedfhat the Wangtai dialect is part of the Northern Min dialect.Japanese scholar Akitani Hiroyuki was the first one to do a genuine study of the Wangtai dialect. After investigating the phonetic system of the Wangtai dialect, he concluded that it shows several significant features of the Central Min group and should be classified as belonging to the Central Min dialect.So far, no one has studied the vocabulary of the Wangtai dialect. As a native speaker, I wanted to do research on the vocabulary of the Wangtai dialect to fill this void. Through self-examination and investigative field work, I described the Wangtai dialect vocabulary system, analyzed its characteristic features, its etymology, its lexical categories, and the dialect’s characteristic words, and based on vocabulary, verified the conclusion drawn by Akitani Hiroyuki that the Wangtai dialect belongs to the Central Min group.This thesis contains seven parts:Part1:"Introduction."It introduces and describesan overview of Wangtai Town, a review of the research on the Wangtai dialect, the sources of the corpus, the purposes and methods of this research, and so on.Part2:"Features of the Wangtai Dialect Vocabulary", an analysis of structure and lexical meaning in the Wangtai dialect.Part3:"Etymology of the Wangtai Dialect." After sorting the six etymologies of the Wangtai vocabulary, I discuss the significance and method of research on the original characters, and try to use them to analyze the original characters of specific individual Wangtai words.Part4:"Close-type Parts of Speech of the Wangtai Dialect." I describe and analyze the close-type parts of speech of the Wangtai dialect. Part5:"The Feature Words of the Wangtai Dialect." I compare the vocabulary of the Wangtai dialect with "200Feature Words of the Min", and extract systematically list some of the basic feature words and the relational feature words between Wangtai dialect and Hakka dialect, Wangtai dialect and Wu dialect.Part6:"Comparison of the Wangtai Dialect Vocabulary with the Yong’an Dialect and the Jian’ou Dialect Vocabularies. Through comparative analysis, I discuss the relationship between the Wangtai dialect and the Yong’an and Jian’ou dialects.Part7:"Conclusion." I summarize the full text, point out the value of this paper, and present the inadequacies and need for further research.
