The thesis is completed on the basis of the translation of The Pursuit of Virtual Life, Liberty, and Happiness and its Economic and Legal Precognitive in The Real World and reflections on the questions arose in the translation process. With its own stylistic features, the original text is defined as a law review, which is different from a legal text or a news report. Currently, scholars at home and abroad have done lots of research into legal translation and have made remarkable achievements. However, unfortunately, few scholars have carried out translation research into writings like a law review. The idea of the thesis is to deepen the research and cognition on the translation of law reviews through solving problems that arose in the translation process, and to find out how translation theories play a guiding role in translation practice. In the translation process, the author adopts the translation theory of Peter Newmark as the theoretical framework, including textual function, semantic translation and communicative translation. Meanwhile, some translation skills are used to explore solutions to translation difficulties. At the lexical level, the author mainly chooses the approaches of amplification and omission. At the syntactic level, the author mainly uses converting passives to actives, following the original syntactic order and reinventing the sentence structure. The accomplishment of this translation project verifies that the translation theory of Peter Newmark is applicable to general translation. Meanwhile, textual context should be taken into consideration and suitable translation skills are selected according to specific circumstances. Besides, external tools such as parallel texts, network resources and authoritative dictionaries can be taken as references. Furthermore, a translator must attach importance to his own bilingual skills. Only in this way, a good translation work can be produced.Since the questions the author raises during the translation process are typical and common for those beginners, she hopes that her reflections could, to some extent, help them in their research. |
