As one offbeat film director of the “sixth generation”, Zhang Yang has beenliving within the system. From Spicy Love Soup at the beginning of1997, Zhang Yangcreated Take a Shower, Yesterday, Sunflower, Falling Leaves, Driverless, Leap inHomes for the Elderly for more than a decade, and quickly became the leader of newgeneration directors. Compared with the other directors of the “sixth generation”,Zhang Yang has always been concerned about the unimportant persons in the citywhose stories mostly focus on their families. The friction and warmth arising from thefamily affection has been incisively shown, and the real touching plot makes theaudience have a strong resonance. These works not only reflect Zhang Yangmeticulous observation of the real life, also express his reflection on real life.This paper totally consists of five parts, intending to do the research on therealistic style for Zhang Yang films based on the analysis of the relevant documentsand the video data. The introduction part mainly runs through the present researchstatus of Zhang Yang’s films. The first chapter mainly aims at defining the relevantconcepts involved in this paper, including film realism, realism of film, and researchof Zhang Yang realistic style as well. The second Chapter focuses on the analysis ofthe present emotional status displayed in Zhang Yang films for the urban people,including the analysis of the family life and family ideas with the changes of the time,the interpretation of the different view of love within various groups of people in thefilms, the attention of the survival condition for the marginalized people of thesociety.The third chapter intends to carry on in-depth analysis aiming at Zhang Yangrealistic technique of expression for his films, such as using long shots to representemotion of the characters related, adopting multilayer composition to highlight socialcontradictions, constructing narrative space to reflect the changes. The fourth chapteror the last chapter, on the basis of the conclusion from above analyses, illustrates the realistic aesthetical features and the practical significance implicated in Zhang Yangfilms, including the concept of creation to promote humanistic care in the face of thereality of the society.This paper, taking Zhang Yang seven films as the carrier with the assistance ofAndre Bazin and the others theories, intends to start from the warmth of the realistictone, analyze the narrative text, the image expression and practical significance toembed with a brand-new angle of view for the study of Zhang Yang films.
