Based on the novel text analysis, this paper focuses on the classical cavalier novels in the Song Dynasty. The study explores this kind of novel’s time characteristics and cultural connotation under a particular social and historical background, and analyzes the narrative features in order to supplement the existing research findings and to provide useful references for relevant research. The article is divided into four parts. The first chapter introduces the research object, status and significance of the classical cavalier novels in the Song Dynasty. From the perspective of diachronism, the changes of "chivalry" concept are explained, on which the scope of the study is defined. The second chapter,"Topic Type and Cultural Connotation of the Classical Cavalier Novels in the Song Dynasty", investigates the novels’cultural connotation from the perspective of the inheritance and development. According to the theme and content, the connotation will be divided into "justice and chivalry","skills and courage","gratitude and revenge" and "loyalty and patriotism". Among them,"justice and chivalry" can be divided into "resolve crises","strike evil" and "promote chivalry" on the basis of the differences of chivalrous means and ends. Combined with the development of the social and cultural status in the Song Dynasty, this section discusses the development and changes of the novels, and affirmed that "justice and chivalry","skills and courage" and "gratitude and revenge" are the succession of the previous novels of the same kind. Influenced by the prevailing political, cultural and other factors, the theme,"loyalty and patriotism", comes into being, on which the "chivalry" in the chivalrous novels in the Ming and Qing Dynasties emerges and develops. The abundant descriptions of the classical chivalrous novels reveal the deep imprint of political, economic and cultural status in the Song Dynasty, and present the rational social atmosphere and the calm and objective spirit. The third part,"The Narrative Analysis of Classical Cavalier Novels in the Song Dynasty", with the references of western narrative theory and the combination of the narrative tradition and narrative mode of Chinese classical novels, analyzes the novels’narrative subject, perspective and time in order to demonstrate their unique narrative character. As for the narrative subject, the three ways that the author involved in the narrative are discussed to reveal the impact of social formation and political systems on people’s characters and values at that time. With regard to the narrative perspective, the different narrative effects from different narrative perspectives are analyzed. For the narrative time, the impact of the timing disorder and spatial transfer on the novels’ narrative is studied to show the effect of this confusion and shift on readers. The forth chapter is the conclusion of the above discussion, pointing out the new trend in classical chivalrous novels in the Song Dynasty, as well as the succession and innovation in content, purpose, theme and narrative art, which is of certain research significance and value.
