A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpretation Practice Of Ebola, Peace And Security

This is a report about English to Chinese simulated simultaneous interpreting ofan audio speech without text given by Ms. Karin Landgren, Special Representative ofthe UN Secretary General to Liberia, in November2014at London School ofEconomics and Political Science. The author analyzes the interpreting skills andproblems encountered, and summarizes solutions to improve the ability ofinterpreting.The author demonstrates the task and preparation before simultaneousinterpreting, highlighting the importance of simultaneous interpreting without text.Ten typical examples are selected from the simulated interpretation to analyze theinterpreting skills and problems, including syntactic linearity, anticipation, additionand omission, conversion, pretermission of interpreting, hesitation and otherproblems.Through analyzing the cases, three factors are summarized as follows: firstly,preparation before interpreting is quite significant. The more fully preparationinterpreters do, the better performance they make. Secondly, listening comprehensionplays an important role. Interpreters without powerful listening ability may lose partof information or give an incorrect interpretation. Thirdly, background informationhas great impact on understanding of source language, which can help interpretersgrasp the crucial information. On the contrary, interpreters may feel confused withoutbackground information.
