This thesis take GongYuan-the examination hall for imperial examinations in Ming andQing Dynasties as the research object. As the core of ancient imperial examination institutions,GongYuan originated in Tang Dynasty, and had rapid development in South SongDynasty. They matured in the Ming Dynasty and perfected in Qing dynasty.GongYuan has its own independent functional system and the architectural constructionfollows certain “pattern”. The records about them is rich in historical documents in Ming andQing Dynasties, And they were recorded as official building, therefore they took animportant part in the government offices buildings in ancient China.With the reference consultation and on-the-spot reservation, The dissertation mainly talksabout how the functional requirements of GongYuan influenced its construction pattern.Firstly it reviews the development of GongYuan in ancient China basedon the history of the ancient imperial examination system. In the Second, it analysis thelocation choosing, construction pattern and spatial distribution by taking examples ofGongYuan in Ming and Qing dynasties, and analysis how the architecture of GongYuanbecame mature and gradually formed the unique architectural rules and complete system inmore than one thousand years.
