Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and WhatAlice Found There are the two masterpieces of Lewis Carroll in children’s literature.They were introduced to China in the1920s and began their travel in China since then.This thesis aims at studying the spread and acceptance of the two Alice works athome, combing out the process of their spreading and acceptance, exploring theinfluence the process has on the foundation of the view on children and the creation ofChinese children’s literature.The thesis is comprised of six chapters. The first chapter includes theintroduction of Lewis Carroll and his two masterpieces, the process of creation,literature review and the significance of the thesis.Chapter Two focuses on the spread and acceptance of Alice’s Adventures inWonderland in China. According to the process of spread and acceptance threephrases are divided: from1916to1930s, from1930s to1980s, from1980s to present.While analyzing the materials collected, the thesis continues to research thebackground information and its influence in each period, presenting the acceptanceresults of two Chinese writers, Shen Congwen’s Alice’s Travels in China and ChenBochui’s Miss Alice. Then the thesis compares Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures inWonderland with the two works, discusses the reasons contributing to the differencesbetween them.Chapter Three summarizes the reasons for the popularity of Alice’s Adventuresin Wonderland both at home and abroad: its beauty of nonsense, the significances andinfluence in literary history. As a classic, it enhances the nonsense literature to thehighest level; it breaks through the rigid formula of Western children literature’smoralism and represents the coming of the golden age of English children’s literature.Chapter Four is the spread and acceptance of Through the Looking-Glass andWhat Alice Found There in China, including its translations and research at home,reasons contributing to the problems found in the process of spread and acceptance.As the sequel of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, it is usually in a subsidiaryposition. Its translation often attaches to that of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland andthey are studied as a whole. It spread into China later than Alice’s Adventures inWonderland, and has not received enough attention.Chapter Five puts forward problems found during the process of research. Whencombing out the spreading and acceptance of the two Alice books we find that thoughgreat achievements have been obtained, there are also obvious limitations. The research perspectives are repetitive; the quality of the research papers needs to beimproved; the object of study focuses on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; thespreading mode of literature is simple; mistakes that can be avoided have been made.Chapter Six is conclusion. This chapter sums up the spread and acceptance of thetwo Alice books in general, looks back the problems found during the process ofresearch, restates the significance of the thesis.
