In recent years, as Chinese teaching has been consistently heating up home and abroad, Chinese language textbook varies a lot. There are548kinds of textbooks published within the decade from1998to2008, on which are of great value to do researches. Apart from those published textbooks, there are many unpublished self-designed ones which count as well.In foreign language teaching, textbooks offer language input which is the core of the activities of learning and teaching. Thus, it is of great importance and necessity that the selection of topics matches the students’ interests when organizing a textbook.This thesis, which consists of six parts, mainly focuses on the topic researches of IES textbooks at the primary and intermediate levels, survey of students’ topic interests and feedbacks after using IES textbooks, data analysis and contrastive analysis between IES textbooks and domestically-published Chinese textbooks with the respect of topic selection.The first part is to introduce the significance of this thesis as well as research objects, research methods. In addition, the overview including previous researches in terms of topics in foreign language textbooks, the relation between topics and textbooks and the significance of topics in the process of foreign language learning and teaching.The second part is the topic researches of IES textbooks at the primary and intermediate levels(in Grade2,3,4). On the basis of doing researches on IES textbooks as well as its referred ones---Integrated Chinese, Third Edition1,2; All Things Considered---Advanced Reader of Modern Chinese; Anything Goes—Advanced Reader of Modern Chinese; China s Peril and Promise—Advanced Reader of Modern Chinese; Literature and Society—Advanced Reader of Modern Chinese, this thesis aims to set up a topics template for the following analysis.The third part is the survey and data analysis concerning students’ topic interests and textbooks feedbacks. The comparisons of topic selection between different topics, different levels and different genders are presented.The forth part is the contrastive analysis between IES textbooks and two domestically-published textbooks---Boya Chinese and New Practical Chinese Reader in respect of topic selection and distribution. Subsequently, this thesis shows the advantages and disadvantages of the two kinds.The fifth part is the conclusion which summarizes the suggestions for IES textbooks when update in the future. Furthermore, this part sums up4points which can benefit other Chinese language intensive programs in China.The sixth part is to sum up the main content of this thesis as well as to point out the shortcomings which need improving and the possibility of further research.
