The Old Man and the Sea is the masterpiece of Ernest Miller Hemingway. The novel has been translated into Chinese by a lot of translators. Due to the interest in literary translation, the writer tried to translate parts of the novel with the intention to promote his skills and understanding in translation. The translation practice focuses on fulfilling the faithfulness of translation standards-being faithful to the novel’s prose style especially. This report can be divided into four chapters. In chapter one, the writer introduces the significance of translating The Old Man and the Sea as well as the preparation for translation. Chapter two covers the stylistic analysis and language features of the novel. In chapter three, the body of the report, the writer elaborates the importance of faithfulness in translation. Meanwhile, he presents the arguement on how to translate the prose style and language faithfully through the comparison of different translations. He also states the difficulties that he has encountered and solutions he has tried, such as the strategy of translating Spanish in The Old Man and the Sea. In the last chapter, the writer shares his experience and understanding he has gained in the translation practice.
