In order to further implement the National Medium-and Long-Term Plan for Education Reform and Development, Dalian University of Technology Medium-and Long-Term development strategic planning and Dalian University of Technology "Twelfth Five-year" development plan, DUT has implemented integrated English education reform program for undergraduates, postgraduates and Ph.D. students since September2012, in which curriculum design reform is one of the key points. The objective of this study is college English curriculum design reform for non-English major undergraduates. Until now, the new reform program has been carried out for nearly two years. As prominent participants in the teaching activities, how do teachers and students respond to and evaluate the newly reformed college English curriculum design? Does it meet the needs of students’English learning? Based on the relevant theoretical and empirical research, this study intends to investigate and evaluate the current college English curriculum design in DUT from the perspectives of teachers and students. This study employs both quantitative research (four questionnaires to Level-1and Level-2sophomores, Level-3and Level-4sophomores, freshmen and teachers respectively) and qualitative research (interviews and classroom observations) to obtain feedback information on the current college English curriculum design from teachers and students. The data gathered from the questionnaires is processed and analyzed in SPSS17.0by means of descriptive statistical analysis to get percentage, mean, mode and standard deviation. The qualitative analysis of the findings is conducted according to the interviews and classroom observations. In this thesis, the current college English curriculum design in DUT has been investigated and evaluated in terms of overall satisfaction with the current curriculum development, degree of satisfaction with the specific courses and students’needs of English learning from the perspectives of teachers and students. The results of investigation indicate that most teachers and students are basically satisfied with the current college English curriculum, however, the present curriculum design needs improvement and perfection for there still exist some problems such as many students’learning methods and habits are still traditional, students’autonomous learning consciousness and ability have not been fully developed, teachers lack of flexible and diversified teaching strategies and provide few opportunities for students to express themselves in class, types of the courses are inadequate, the number of class hours for College English1, College English2and College English3is fewer, follow-up courses for Level-4students are insufficient. On the basis of above problems, the thesis proposed some reflections and feasible suggestions to further improvement and optimization of the college English curriculum design in DUT. Besides, certain contributions to the newly designed college English curriculum evaluation in DUT have been made.
