With the continuous development of tourism industry in China since China opened her door to the outside world, and a growing number of foreign tourists came to China. Meanwhile, in the year of1987, China approved Dalian being a costal, economic open city. With the help of its unique tourism resource, a large number of overseas visitors are attracted by Dalian’s well known sightseeing. Therefore, high quality Chinese-English tourism materials are indispensable. In the past twenty years, so many scholars and researchers are totally involved in the standardized study of English translation of tourism materials. Definitely their study results make great contributions to the strategy and principles of tourism materials translation. The English translation of tourism materials, as one of effective ways to exchange cultures between China and western countries, plays an important role in intercultural communication between them.Compared with western researches on the standardized study of tourism materials translation, our domestic academic relevant study lags behind much. Like the leader in western countries, Hendricks Archer, has achieved obvious success in tourism materials translation. He built his own theory in the relevant study in this field. But until now, we have not yet built up a complete theoretical system domestically. We still have urgent problems to be solved. In the framework of Conversational Cooperative Principle, the author uses this theory to study the guidance of the standardized English translation of tourism materials in the scenic spots. At the same time, the author uses a case study of well-known scenic spots in Dalian as samples of analysis to tentatively discuss English translation of tourism materials from Conversational Cooperative Principle.Conversational Cooperative Principle was first put forward by Paul Grice in the year of1967. According to Conversational Cooperative Principle, during the communication between people the speaker and the listener seemingly obey a sort of principle so as to fulfill the communication task effectively. In addition, Grice also put forward four maxims includes "Quality, Quantity, Relation and Manner" to build the system, and also make clear definition of four maxims and sub maxims. In the first half of this thesis, the author elaborates on the Grice’s Conversational Cooperative Principle and holds the idea that its four maxims should be applied to guiding tourism material translation of scenic spots in Dalian. In the second half of the thesis, the author illustrates the application of the four maxims in the Conversational Cooperative Principle to the English translation of tourism materials, explaining with the relevant examples. What’s more, the author also reveals three important steps of tourism material translation. First of all, the translator fully understands the essential materials based on Conversational Cooperative Principle. Then, the translator should pay attention to the deep meaning of essential materials. Finally, the translator uses the most appropriate means to deliver the message from the essential materials to the readers with the help of Conversational Cooperative Principle and its four maxims. The first chapter reveals the necessity of tourism material translation and theoretical study. The second chapter reviews the effort and contribution to tourism materials translation by overseas and domestic scholars and researchers. The third chapter emphasizes the concepts of Conversational Cooperative Principle and its four maxims and its applicable feasibility to tourism material translation. The fourth chapter makes a concrete analysis of application of Conversational Cooperative Principle to the tourism translation. The fifth chapter takes the well-known scenic spots as a case study to study the application of Conversational Cooperative Principle to tourism materials translation. In the last chapter, the author indicates the practical implications of this study and suggestions for future researches. This thesis aims to make a practical study on application of Conversational Cooperative Principle and its four maxims to the English translation of tourism materials of scenic spots in Dalian. The author sincerely hopes that an increasing number of scholars will join in the research field of tourism material translation.
