In recent years, autonomous learning has received great attention. Studies on Englishautonomous learning have entered a relatively mature stage. In China the significance andnecessity of English autonomous learning is widely realized in college English learning.Teachers play an irreplaceable role in the process of student’s autonomous learning. Toknow students’ expectation of teachers’ roles in the process of students’ autonomouslearning can help teachers to know in what aspects the freshmen need guidance and helpfrom the teachers in autonomous learning.Freshmen who just graduated from high school are influenced by the learning modeof high schools. They are used to learning in the teaching mode in which teachers arecentered. In college they must change their learning mode, and learn more autonomously. What is their expectation of teachers’ roles in the process of their learning? Are theredifferences in their expectation of teachers’ roles when they are different in English level? What are the differences? The study about these questions can help teachers to find out theaspects in which freshmen need teachers’ help in their autonomous learning. This studyintends to investigate the freshmen’s expectation of teachers’ roles in college Englishautonomous learning and the differences in freshmen’s expectation of teachers’ roles whenfreshmen are different in English level. Questionnaires and interview were applied to thequalitative and quantitative research on the two specific research questions mentionedabove.150freshmen filled in the questionnaires which include20items about the roles ofcollege English teachers in college English autonomous learning. Statistic Package forSocial Science13.0(SPSS13.0) has been used in analyzing the data coming fromquestionnaires. The statistics coming from questionnaires were analyzed combined withwhat freshmen talked in the interview.Through analysis of the statistics coming from questionnaires and what intervieweestalked about in the interview the researcher found out that freshmen expected teachers toplay three roles in college English autonomous learning: helpers, advisors, and resourceproviders. Meanwhile it is found that in some degree there are differences in freshmen’sexpectation of teachers’ roles when freshmen are different in English level. Freshmen’sattitude toward autonomous learning change with their English level. Through the study of the freshmen’s expectation of teachers’ roles in college Englishautonomous learning the researcher finds out that in order to improve freshmen’sautonomous learning teachers should make freshmen clearly define their roles in theprocess of autonomous learning and reduce their dependence on teachers by advocatingbeliefs of autonomous learning, help students to set goals and make feasible plans for theirEnglish autonomous learning, introduce some autonomous learning strategies to freshmen, create a cooperative learning atmosphere for autonomous learning, and combine formativeevaluation and summative evaluation in the process of evaluating freshmen’s Englishautonomous learning.
