The arrival of intellectual economy times makes the mankind has entered a " learning society". The traditional way of learning has made the individual unable to Adapt to the challenge of the rapid development of science and technology, and " learn how to learn"," lifelong learning" has become a task that a person must face." University English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation)"(January2004) point out clearly, an important indicator of success to reform the teaching mode is the students learning methods and the development of autonomous learning ability of students. Cultivation of College Students’autonomy ability in foreign language learning has become an important task for China’s current foreign language education. However, the problem " taking much time, have low Profit" still exists in the current English Teaching in China. Classroom teaching has great limitations, which can not fully satisfy the students’acquirement of knowledge and cultivation of the ability. Especially, students of the high vocational college are very different from the ordinary college students and high school students, such as:the vocational college students mostly from rural, admission scores always lower. Their Cultural foundation is poorer, Learning enthusiasm is not high, Learning objectives are not clear, and lack of self-confidence. So, students of the high vocational college are always feeling hopeless. In addition, they have to take more professional courses, the time leaving for English learning is very limited their English comprehensive ability cann’t improve in the limited classroom learning, so learning effect is not ideal.In recent years, many domestic and foreign scholars have chosen the the general undergraduate university students as objects, carried out researches on the English learning strategies. Their results generally showed that English learning strategies can help learners to focus energy and use of time efficiently, to make English learning really efficient. However, choosing the freshmen of Higher Vocational College English as objects to research their autonomous learning strategies are few. This thesis is mainly research English autonomous learning strategies for freshmen in Higher Vocational College often used. Higher occupation technique education has an very important position in the construction of our national economic construction. Higher Vocational English teaching, also differs from other undergraduate college. The author thinks it’s very necessary that have a research on the freshmen of vocational college on English autonomous learning of learning strategy in English learning. The research can help the English teachers in Higher Vocational Colleges have a clear understanding of the freshmen’s English learning strategies level. In the light of the typical problems exists in students’ use of English learning strategies, the English teachers should explore actively, to ensure the success of the reform of English Teaching in Higher Vocational education.In this thesis, Oxford Learning Strategies Questionnaire, which has been widely used in this field, are used to support our research. We picked out182freshmen from Gansu Polytechnic College of Animal Husbandry&Engineering as objects. Certainly, we also interview20students to gain more information. Through the questionnaire survey and interviews we found that there are some problems to the students’English autonomous learning, as following:(1)lack of Autonomous English learning strategies awareness;(2) lack of knowledge of language learning strategy, use English learning strategies too less.(3) the ability of autonomous learning is very poor.In Vocational College English teaching, the teachers should teach the freshmen English learning strategies according to the students’ characteristics, cultivate the use of consciousness of students’ Autonomous English learning strategies, and strengthen the students’ Autonomous English learning strategy training. In order to guide the freshmen to learn the English learning strategies of knowledge repeatedly and apply them to the whole process of English autonomous learning. The students’ English autonomous learning ability will improve greatly through the learning strategy training, so as to improve the freshmen’s level of English autonomous learning of Higher Vocational College and the level of College English teaching quality.This thesis includes of four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, elaborated the reason and significance for selecting the topic, and research content and research methods and research framework, and a review of the literature, mainly introduced both the domestic and foreign experts’ and scholars’ correlation research results on the autonomous learning strategies, and provides an overview of English autonomous learning theory formation and development, as well as give the definition of relevant concepts.The second chapter is the investigation of Vocational College Freshmen’s English learning strategies. This study puts forward hypothesis, and introduces the research object, research tools, and detect the results and have a detailed analysis, summed up the Vocational College Freshmen English learning strategies they often used.The third chapter according to the analysis results, to proposed having English learning strategies training in higher Vocational College, cultivating students’ awareness of autonomous learning and English learning strategies training ways.The fourth chapter is a summary of this thesis and research on English learning strategies of higher vocational colleges the prospect, and reflect on the shortcomings in the research and methodological limitations.
