Translating Strategies In The Chinese Versions Of The Lord Of The Rings:the Fellowship Of The Ring

This thesis tries to analyze the two Chinese versions of The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring by means of comparative study. They are the version translated by Zhu Xueheng and the version translated by Ding Di. By the way of comparative study, this thesis analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the two Chinese versions under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, so as to make a better understanding of the theory of Nida’s theory and its application in literature translation.Firstly, the thesis makes a brief introduction to the structure of this paper and elaborates the research method, the theory and the significance.Secondly, the thesis introduces the fiction The Lord of The Rings.The Fellowship of the Ring and the two Chinese versions.Thirdly, the thesis introduces Nida’s functional equivalence theory and elaborates the principles of the theory.Then the thesis analyzes the version translated by Zhu Xueheng and the version translated by Ding Di from semantic aspect. The thesis chooses some examples from two versions. The thesis takes adjectives and verbs as examples to explain the equivalence of word. The thesis also takes parallelism and metaphor as examples to explain the equivalence of rhetoric.The thesis also analyzes the version translated by Zhu Xueheng and the version translated by Ding Di from pragmatic aspect. The thesis chooses some examples from two versions. The thesis takes names of races and names of places in the original fiction have been selected and analyzed to explain the equivalence of proper nouns, and also takes speech acts and expression forms as examples have been dealt with to explain the equivalence of pragmatic function.Based on the comparative analysis of the examples from both Chinese versions, the thesis states the significance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory in literature translation, with a hope to offer some practical suggestions to those who are pursuing in the relevant theory study and literature translation.
