Public speaking is to express one’s ideas in front of the audience. The aim ofpublic speaking is to convey the speaker’s ideas so as to achieve influential andpersuasive consequences etc. Generally speaking, the public speaker needs to masterthe language and the public communication skills. The forms of public speaking arevarious and closely relate to our daily life.Interpreting, as a form of oral conveying, can transfer the source language intothe target language accurately and quickly. Interpreting is a tool in the communicationof cross-culture. The process of interpreting is the process of input and output. Nomatter how many audiences there are, interpretation, presented in the public speakingway, conveys the meaning of source language. Public speaking skills can bediscovered in every step of interpretation.He or she,in order to be a qualifiedinterpreter, should master the skills of public speaking, both the non-verbal ones andthe verbal ones. For the non-verbal abilities, in general, both speakers and interpreters,in general, should have abundant extralinguistic knowledge, attractiveperformance aswell as sound psychologicalconditions. For verbal abilities, generally speaking,correct and appropriate expression is required for speakers and interpreters.Based on the project of the Destination New South Wales&Tourism and EventsQueensland (DNSW&TEQ) Joint China Mission, this thesis mainly analyzes howpublic speaking skills influence the interpreting through study of Lasswell formula.Through studying the following parts: the project and the consecutive interpreting, thethesis will analyze the similarities between public speaking and consecutiveinterpreting and most importantly, the application of public speaking skills in theproject. In addition, in the thesis, major skills of interpreting will be covered. Byanalyzing the similarities between consecutive interpreting and public speaking, interms of non-verbal ones and verbal ones, the thesis will concern about some skills ofpublic speaking and improvements of consecutive interpreting. For the part of application of public speaking skills in the project, it will be segmented to the pre-TIC,in-TCI and post-TCI. For the application to the TCI, the interpreter, to some extent,should concern about the following factors: the speaker, the content of speech and theaudience. The gesture, standing posture, eye contact, voice, as well as stage frightshould be concerned by the interpreter in the application to the in-TCI. In terms of theapplication to the post-TCI, the interpreter should have self-reflection so as toenhance the interpreting skills.Last but not least, the thesis will present the findings ofthe interpreting project, such as problems of listening and terminologies. Solvingthese problems can help the interpreter to enhance the interpreting skills.
