Sourcing from the yuefu folk ballads of the time, literary ni-yuefu poetry (poetry created by literati in the manner of yuefu of the Southern Dynasties has, on the one hand, successfully acquired innovations with regard to poetic form, content, language and skills, and gradually get rid of the awkward style fashioned since the Jin and Song dynasties, breathing a new life into the poetry of the Southern Dynasties. On the other hand, the ni-yuefu writing experience obtained by the literati has, in return, boosted the creativity of the poets of the Qiliang dynasties, and as a result, conduced to the reformation of the Qiliang poetry. In short, the newly-emerging yuefu folk ballads of the Southern Dynasties became a turning point for the development of Qiliang poetry, the practice of literary ni-yuefu an agent for its transformation, and not-for-music literati poetry a carrier for its production:it is exactly in this way that Qiliang poetry achieved its poetic reformation. Its influence upon the Chinese poetry in general is also reflected in a deeper blending of refined and popular cultures.
