As the development of society and economy, parents pay more and more attention to the education and trainings of their children. In home education, parent-child reading is highly valued by parents and pleasant experience of the reading has become an important demand. Because of the digitalization, parent-child reading materials demonstrate the digital development trend and various kinds of electronic readings emerge in endlessly. Taking equipments such as iPad as carrier, interactive picture books for children belong to the children’s electronic reading materials as its words, verbal language, music, picture, animation, video and other digital forms have been added into traditional printed books with pictures and all these are electronic. This new parent-child reading material can promote the diversity, interaction and enjoyment of reading activity, enrich the experience and ensure the efficiency of reading process.The current parent-child reading situation at home and abroad and the application of children’s interactive picture books have been studied firstly in this paper. The main reading model. function design and interactive design of the application of current children’s interactive picture books have been summarized after understanding the development of parent-child reading. Then, interviews and questionnaires targeting parents of preschool children have been conducted jointly to understand their demands during parent-child reading after analysis on the features of preschool children through observations and literature reviews. A further summarization of user experience objects when reading interactive picture book will be finished on the basis of research results. Then design emphasis of interactive picture book application will be obtained based on the demands of preschool children and their parents during reading, which is also called the innovation of reading model. Based on Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, a brand-new layered reading model has been proposed. Definitions of needs with three payers including primary needs, needs of easy to use and emotional needs are proposed through the constructing reading scenario of layered reading model. At last, interactive analysis of interactive picture book application and plan design of interface prototype will be carried out on the basis of the needs definition as well as design principles and factors. Usability evaluation and design optimization will also be implemented on the plan.The major innovative point in this paper is the brand-new reading model proposed for parent-child reading on the basis of Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, which is also called the layered reading model. Interactive picture book application based on layered reading model conforms to the features of preschool children’s physical and mental development and follows the experience objects of the reading. Meanwhile, it satisfies the enjoyment needs of parents and children during the reading process.
