The report is based on the translation of Candle in the Darkness by the famous Christian writer, Austin·Lynn. The writer can apply the translation knowledge he has learnt into the practice, improve the level of translation through this practice and writing this report.The report consists of three parts.Part One is introduction, which points out the importance of Candle in the Darkness in the history of America literature. Therefore, it is quite meaningful to choose this book as the translation material. This practice may enable readers to better understand the history of America Civil War.Part Two is the main body including three chapters. Chapter I gives a brief description of the novel and author. It also briefly introduces functional equivalence theory, which has been applied in the translation. Chapter II describes the whole translation process in detail, including the preparation before the translation( the collection of related material and the process of studying the background knowledge), the process of solving problems in the translation and a series of work after the translation that mainly refers to the work of proofreading. Chapter III gives a systematic description of the difficulties in the translation step by step. It not only describes the translation of vocabulary, but also the translation of difficult sentences. At the same time, it briefly introduces the writer’s translation experience.Part Three is conclusion, which briefly summarizes the content of the report and what readers can get by reading the report.
