On The Translation Of Oscar Wilde’s Fairy Tales From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This report applies Skopos theory to the translation of children’ s literature. Under the guidance of Skopos theory, it compares two Chinese versions of Oscar Wilde’ s two fairy tales and discusses the advantages and shortcomings of each version.Skopos theory regards translation as a kind of human activity with specific purposes. It puts the purpose of translation in the first place. Instead of advocating establishing formal linguistic equivalence between the source text and the target text, while also emphasizes that translation methods and strategies should be determined by the intended functions of the target text in target culture. What’s more, Skopos theory focuses on the importance of target readers.Generally, the translation of children’ s literature is expected to attract children’ s attention so as to realize the purpose of entertaining and educating them. Bearing this purpose in mind, translators should take into consideration the text type and function of children’ s literature, then take on corresponding translation methods.This report includes four parts. The first part mainly introduces the current study about children’ s literature. The second part mainly introduces the features about translating children’ s literature as well as Skopos theory. The third part is a case study on translation approaches through a comparative analysis. The last part is a summary of this report and its significance.
