An artist is an outstanding person who develops in the influence of national and historical culture, environment of his time and the special individual quality of his own.Fu Baoshi lived in the first half of the 20 th century and is now more and more popular in art circles. He had a strong sense of conviction about subjectivity of national art on the one hand, but he elaborately selected and adopted some foreign arts and methods on the other hand; he developed Chinese scholar painting for one thing, but he hated the dying embers of art following the schooling of library art for another thing; he spent all his life specializing in Chinese calligraphy, seal cutting as well as its art history on the one hand, and on the other hand, he broadened his horizon and came into contact with Japanese painting, watercolor and sketch and learned more methods in studying painting during his studying abroad. Different from Huang Binhong and Wu Changshuo who were used to having a thorough research on ancient stuffs first and then turned the foul and rotten into the rare and the ethereal, and also having little in common with Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian who always drafted the flower of western painting methods onto their owns, Fu Baoshi set a new example between the two of them.The author spent a lot of time in early preparations of this paper including excerpting and reorganizing descriptive comments and main ideas of Fu Baoshi’s painting ideology in his works and studied about Fu Baoshi’s painting works on the basis of my inspirations motivated by his painting ideology. This paper takes Fu Baoshi’s basic principles in artistic creation as the entry point and analyzes his history accomplishments referring to his existing works as well as the authorized and selected ones in domestic organizations. In this paper,the author firstly analyzes how Fu Baoshi art comes into being and secondly presents the basic principles of Fu Baoshi’s artistic creation in four aspects and finally makes a respective and thorough analysis of influences of his thoughts and skills in landscape painting in his four periods. Compared with features in social customs, model-making ideas and technique use of his time, the paper presents the exclusive personality and spirituality of Fu Baoshi’s artistic ideology in such a special time ground as well as its unique features in artistic creation. Based on document arrangement, works analysis and style research, this paper tries to provide some helps in rational thinking of problems relating to Fu Baoshi’s artisticideology and art works and does its best to make some explanations on them by a comprehensive application of multidisciplinary crossed theory and methods including sociology, historiography and comparison theory as well as of my individual painting practices, relevant thoughts and knowledge.
