The Reproduction Of Writing Style In C-E Local Culture Reader Translation

Liang Qichao once wrote in his poem: “Ah! Magnificent is thy wind, turbulent is thy tide. Dragon roams freely in turbulent waves, T’is totem of our nation; Phoenix that rebirths in raging flames represents our nation’s unfailing spirit. Thy flame of civilization, and none other, illuminates through all the ages.” These lines well manifest the broadness and long heritage of the Chinese culture. The local culture of China is rich and diversified, each blossoming in radiant splendor. And all these local cultures compose the splendid and glorious Chinese civilization. With the economic rise of China, the Chinese culture is gradually reaching out to the world and books concerning the Chinese local culture are emerging in multitudes. This thesis aims to explore the C-E translation of this kind of books and reproduction of their writing styles. Based on stylistics and its translation strategies, this thesis conducts a study on C-E translation of Jiangsu Reader in terms of word, sentence and passage etc. so as to find out ways to reproduce the elegant taste and sentiments. By doing this, I hope foreign readers may get a better understanding of the Chinese local culture and be tempted to visit there themselves. Moreover, this thesis summarizes several feasible translation strategies that may shed some light on the C-E translation on local culture reader:Firstly, translators should choose source texts with distinctive writing styles; Secondly, translators should stick to the foreignization strategy and use domestication strategy only when it is absolutely necessary in order to preserve the original taste and flavor of source texts;Thirdly, translators should use the methods of amplification and reduction, combination and division properly, so as to convey messages clearly and reproduce the writing styles of source texts.
