Swordsman film, a film type with most distinct Chinese characteristics, is the soundest film type among Chinese unsound film types as well as one of these film types of the most box office appeal and of the greatest international influence. In the 21 st century, with the deepening of cultural globalization, the cultural blending between different cultures has become more and more frequent with the cultural collision and even the cultural contending becoming fiercer. As a member of mass media, film and television is equipped with the media function and attribute of carrying and transmitting information. Nowadays, with the highly-developed information technology, film has become one of the fastest and most convenient ways to transmit various mainstream cultures of different societies. Swordsman film enjoys exceptional advantages in carrying forward national culture due to its popularity. Under such circumstance, the study on national features of swordsman blockbusters is of great significance.This paper chooses the most representative swordsman blockbusters of greatest influence in whole Chinese filmdom as its research subject. Documentary research method, comparative research method, and film criticism are employed to explore respectively the form and content of swordsman blockbusters with national features, basing on previous studies on swordsman film as well as other relevant disciplines, such as Film and Television Communication and Swordsman Literature etc.. The inheritance and development of the form and content of swordsman blockbusters in the new century, such as camera performance, action design, acoustics, basic theme, main story, and narrative pattern etc., have been discussed through diachronic research and comparison. Meanwhile, artistic and commercial gains and losses have been explored. In the new century, the development of digital technology and the joining of directors good at other film types have great impact on the manifestation of swordsman blockbusters with national features. On one hand, the digital technology enriches the ways to manifest national features of swordsman blockbusters, bringing audience with amazing auto-visual enjoyment; on the other hand, the “hyper-real†auto-visual effect brought by digital technology increases the psychological distance of audience with the blockbusters. In the content, although the diversification of themes, the disassembling of traditional chivalry and the blending of various film types have enriched swordsman films, the chivalry and underlying cultural connotation of swordsman films fade away, which contributes to the dissatisfaction of audience’s aesthetic psychology. Suggestions for the manifestation of national features of swordsman films are proposed. Follow-up swordsman blockbusters are expected to stick with national features, be aware of cultural consciousness, and seek balance between artistic function and commercial function with the acceleration of international cultural exchange.It shall be noted that the development of national features of spokesman films is never immutable. National features of spokesman films are improved gradually through inheriting tradition and constantly learning from other film types. New elements will be added to national features with the progress of the society and times. Therefore, studies on national features of swordsman blockbusters are supposed to be conducted under the dynamic development of history. Chinese swordsman films are expected to stick with centurial national features, go farther in the trend of times, make a contribution for the sustainable development of Chinese film industry and bridge for Chinese culture going globally. |
