Research On The Evolution Of Nearly 30 Years China Mainland Family Ethics TV Drama Theme

Since its introduction in 1958, Chinese drama series(refer to "drama series thereafter) has became an important genre in its kind and gained high popularity among the audiences. From 1990 s till present time, drama series evolves gradually mature, especially after the millennium both in terms of numbers and artistry.Based on the themes and storylines of the drama series, as well as the Chinese TV series industries evolution, this thesis categories drama series in three stages: first, China’s reform in the 1980s(i.e. 1978-1989), which its ideological characteristics is distinct due to social and political environment and series makers were restricted to certain topics. The second stage is between 1990-1999, which sees a rise in feminist awareness among drama series, more attentions were drawn to the survival, career and sentiments of the individual female. The third stage, which begins since 2000, has a considerable increase in both the number of drama series and entertaining functions under the influence of market economy, consumerism and needs for entertainment. Moreover, drama series during this stage shows more narratives of social phenomenons and current issues, thus diversification is also another key feature.This thesis, including introduction has four parts. The introduction part discussed the reason of conducting this research, literature reviews and outlines some key concepts associate with the research questions. Chapter one discussed the characteristics of drama series since the millennium and the reasons. Chapter two discussed the feminism awareness among the drama series in 1990 s, specifically from marriage, family and career perspective. Chapter three discussed the themes, narratives and diversification of the drama series since 2000. The last chapter discussed the pros and cons, as well as future evolvement of drama series from its social effects, aesthetic value and market value.
